During the past 40 years, L’Oréal has invented more than 130 original molecules that have translated into advanced technologies for consumers. The L’Oréal Group holds more than 35,000 patents globally, and our research labs have produced numerous international breakthroughs.

Our laboratories strive to design and develop innovative and compassionate techniques for testing the safety and efficacy of our products. L’Oréal Research has pioneered alternative techniques for product testing through cell culture and reconstructed skin, and is a leader in developing alternatives to animal testing.

Breakthrough Innovations

From polymers to niosomes, from haircolor to ceramides, from sunscreens to emulsifiers: hundreds of new molecules have been synthesized in L'Oréal laboratories over the last 35 years. Intensive testing and evaluation has led to their incorporation in innovative beauty and personal care products marketed around the world.

World Leader in Registering Patents

L'Oréal is the world leader among companies registering patents in the cosmetics field. L'Oréal filed for 612 new patents in 2012 .This creative force is the lifeblood of our researchers and provides the fuel for future innovations.

Worldwide Research

The constant exchange of ideas and new technologies between the Group's research centers worldwide assures the development of better, more effective products. The fact that the Group has numerous evaluation centers in Europe, North America, Latin America and Asia means that we can test these products under real conditions.
